US Envoy Sergio Gor Highlights Security and Trade Focus After PM Modi-Rubio Talks
US envoy calls Modi-Rubio meeting productive, boosts ties.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Saturday described the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio as “productive,” underscoring the continued strengthening of India–US relations amid expanding cooperation in strategic and economic domains. Gor accompanied Rubio during the high-level discussions held in the national capital, which focused on deepening bilateral engagement.
In a post on social media platform X, Gor said both sides discussed ways to broaden collaboration in critical areas including security, trade, and advanced technologies. He also reaffirmed India’s importance to the United States in advancing a “free and open Indo-Pacific,” a long-standing strategic priority for Washington and its regional partners.
The meeting also saw the formal communication of an invitation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the White House in the “near future,” extended on behalf of US President Donald Trump. The invitation is seen as part of ongoing efforts to maintain high-level diplomatic momentum between the two countries despite recent trade-related tensions.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in New Delhi earlier in the day as part of a multi-city visit to India that also included stops in Kolkata, Agra and Jaipur. During his trip, Rubio is scheduled to hold talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and participate in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting, which brings together India, the United States, Australia and Japan to discuss regional security and strategic cooperation.
Prime Minister Modi, in his own statement on X, said the discussions with Rubio covered the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership along with regional and global peace and security issues. Officials indicated that global developments, including the ongoing Iran-related tensions, were likely part of the dialogue, reflecting the broad geopolitical scope of the engagement.
The visit comes at a sensitive moment in India–US relations, which have recently experienced friction over trade tariffs and India’s energy imports from Russia. However, both countries have since moved toward stabilising ties through a renewed trade framework and continued diplomatic engagement, signalling a mutual interest in sustaining strategic cooperation across multiple sectors.
