US Embassy in Israel Warns Americans: ‘We Can’t Guarantee Your Safety’
US Embassy warns Americans cannot be safely evacuated from Israel.
The United States Embassy in Jerusalem issued a stark security alert on March 2, 2026, stating it is currently unable to evacuate or directly assist American citizens seeking to depart Israel amid the intensifying US-Israel-Iran conflict now in its fourth day. The embassy emphasized that it "cannot guarantee your safety" for any departure options, including a shuttle service arranged by Israel's Ministry of Tourism to Taba, Egypt, for onward travel to Cairo or other destinations.
In the alert posted online, embassy officials explained that the US government is not positioned to facilitate evacuations due to the volatile security environment, which includes ongoing missile exchanges, drone attacks, and regional retaliations. US Ambassador Mike Huckabee reinforced this position, noting that Americans in Israel face "very limited options" for leaving the country. The embassy explicitly stated it could make no recommendation for or against using the Israeli Ministry of Tourism shuttle, describing the information as a courtesy only. This comes as the broader Middle East faces widespread airspace closures, disrupted commercial flights, and heightened risks from cross-border strikes.
The announcement aligns with a sweeping US State Department directive urging all American citizens to "DEPART NOW" from more than a dozen Middle Eastern countries, including Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Egypt, and Iran. The advisory cites "serious safety risks" from the escalating violence, which has seen US and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets, Iranian counterattacks on US assets—including an embassy hit in Riyadh—and threats to close key waterways like the Strait of Hormuz. Non-emergency US government personnel and families have been authorized to leave several regional posts.

The inability to guarantee evacuations reflects the challenges of operating in an active conflict zone, where commercial travel remains the primary means of exit despite frequent disruptions. Thousands of Americans, including dual citizens, tourists, and residents, are believed to be in Israel, with many scrambling for available flights or alternative routes through neighboring countries where borders and airspaces permit. The US has previously conducted large-scale evacuations in crises, but current conditions, including direct threats to US interests, have limited such options.
This development heightens concerns for US nationals caught in the crossfire of the widening war, which has already caused significant civilian and military casualties across the region. As the conflict shows no immediate signs of de-escalation—with President Donald Trump warning of further "punishing" actions—the embassy urged Americans to monitor updates closely, use commercial means where possible, and contact the embassy for country-specific guidance. The situation underscores the profound risks to foreign nationals in volatile conflict zones and the constraints on government assistance during rapid escalations.
