US envoy highlights shared values after Rubio’s visit to Kolkata charity.

US Ambassador Sergio Gor has highlighted the importance of shared humanitarian values in strengthening India–United States relations following a visit to the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata along with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The visit formed part of Rubio’s official four-day tour of India, marking his first trip to the country since taking office last year.

In a post on social media platform X, Ambassador Gor said that moments like the visit to the Missionaries of Charity serve as a reminder that the US–India partnership is built not only on policy cooperation but also on shared values of compassion and selfless service. He noted that such engagements help reinforce people-to-people ties between the two nations beyond strategic and diplomatic interests.

Rubio arrived in Kolkata on Saturday morning and was received by senior officials upon landing. The visit to the Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa, was among his first engagements in India before moving on to other cities including Agra and Jaipur as part of his scheduled diplomatic tour.

According to official details shared by the US Embassy, Rubio is expected to travel to New Delhi later in the day for meetings with senior Indian leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation across defence, trade, energy security, and Indo-Pacific regional stability.

Ambassador Gor also welcomed Rubio’s visit, describing it as part of an ambitious diplomatic agenda aimed at deepening the US–India Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. He pointed to upcoming engagements such as the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting as key platforms for advancing shared priorities among India, the United States, Australia, and Japan.

The Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is scheduled to take place in New Delhi on May 26, where External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will host his counterparts from the participating countries. The discussions are expected to focus on regional security, economic cooperation, and strengthening coordination in the Indo-Pacific amid evolving global geopolitical challenges.
