US Accuses Iran of Trying to Assassinate Trump at Heated UN Security Council Meeting
US alleges Iran plotted against Trump as Security Council debates widening regional conflict.
The United States leveled serious accusations against Iran during an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Saturday, with Washington alleging that Tehran attempted to assassinate US President Donald Trump. The charged exchange unfolded amid escalating military hostilities across parts of the Middle East, as both sides defended their actions and traded sharp warnings before the international body.
US Ambassador Mike Waltz accused Iran of pursuing what he described as an “unending campaign of bloodshed and mass murder,” claiming that Tehran had targeted Trump directly and through proxy forces. He argued that Iran’s actions threaten American troops, overseas bases, and global allies. Waltz maintained that recent US military measures were lawful and necessary, asserting that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons was a matter of international security rather than domestic politics.
Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, echoed Washington’s position, stating that Israeli actions were aimed at preventing Iran’s “extremism” from becoming “unstoppable.” He stressed that Israel would not allow what he termed a radical regime armed with nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles to endanger its citizens or broader global security.

Iran’s UN Ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, rejected the allegations and condemned US and Israeli airstrikes, saying they had killed and injured hundreds of Iranian civilians. He described the attacks as war crimes and crimes against humanity, urging the council to intervene. Iravani did not address Trump’s prior public claim that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, had been killed, but he and Waltz exchanged pointed remarks during the session, reflecting deepening diplomatic hostility.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for immediate de-escalation, warning that failure to contain the crisis could trigger a wider regional conflict with severe humanitarian consequences. He also criticized Iran’s retaliatory strikes as violations of the sovereignty of several Gulf states. The emergency meeting was convened at the request of Bahrain, France, Russia, China and Colombia, underscoring growing international concern as the United Kingdom concluded its rotating council presidency ahead of the United States assuming the role for March.
