Urgent Advisory Issued For Indian Seafarers Following Iran Conflict, Missile Strikes

DG Shipping urges Indian seafarers in Iran and Strait of Hormuz to exercise extreme caution.

The Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) has issued an urgent advisory for Indian seafarers in Iran and those transiting the Strait of Hormuz, following escalating hostilities between the United States, Israel, and Iran. The alert comes amid coordinated strikes by the US and Israel on Iranian territory, which triggered retaliatory missile and drone attacks, as well as a recent oil tanker attack off Oman that injured four crew members.

DG Shipping warned that all Indian-flagged vessels, as well as Indian seafarers on foreign-flagged ships operating in Iranian ports or passing through the Strait of Hormuz, should exercise extreme caution. The advisory specifically urged seafarers in Iran awaiting vessel joining, wages, or safe repatriation to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary movement ashore.

The agency stressed that seafarers must strictly follow advisories issued by the Embassy of India in Tehran and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). It also urged them to register their details online or through family members with the Indian Embassy to ensure proper tracking and support in the rapidly evolving situation.

The attack on the oil tanker highlights the vulnerability of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit corridor, and raised international concern over potential disruptions to energy supplies. Experts warn that the recent escalations could have broader implications for global maritime security and trade.

The advisory comes in the wake of the US-Israeli airstrikes that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with his daughter, son-in-law, and grandchild. Iranian state media confirmed the deaths, and the clerical establishment has appointed Ayatollah Alireza Arafi as interim Supreme Leader.

The DG Shipping alert reflects the heightened risks for Indian nationals in the region, emphasizing safety measures amid geopolitical instability, while members of the Shia community in parts of India, including Lucknow, Ladakh, and Kashmir, have observed prayers and remembrance gatherings following Khamenei’s death.
