Union Minister Kumaraswamy Calls For Public Debate With CM Shivakumar On Bidadi Plan
Kumaraswamy challenges CM Shivakumar to public debate over Bidadi township issue.
Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has challenged Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to a public debate over the controversial Bidadi township project, escalating the political confrontation surrounding one of the state’s most debated infrastructure proposals.
The challenge comes amid continued disagreement between the two leaders over the Greater Bengaluru Integrated Township project in Bidadi, located on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The project, which involves large-scale land acquisition, has become a major flashpoint in Karnataka politics, with opposition parties and farmer groups raising concerns over displacement and loss of agricultural land, while the state government defends it as a planned development initiative.
Kumaraswamy, who has consistently opposed the project, has alleged that it benefits real estate interests and ignores the concerns of local farmers. He has repeatedly demanded that the government scrap the project and questioned the consent process for land acquisition. His remarks have intensified political tensions, particularly as protests from affected villages continue to grow.

On the other hand, Shivakumar has defended the township initiative, stating that it was originally conceptualised during earlier administrations and is being continued as part of long-term urban planning. He has also maintained that a significant portion of farmers have agreed to the project, arguing that compensation and development benefits justify the acquisition process. The Deputy Chief Minister has previously signalled his willingness to engage in an open debate, saying he is ready to face critics on the issue.
The Bidadi township project has become a recurring point of confrontation between the ruling Congress leadership in Karnataka and the opposition Janata Dal (Secular), reflecting deeper political rivalry in the state. The dispute has also drawn attention from farmer groups, who have staged protests and demanded a halt to land acquisition, further complicating the government’s push for the project.
With both leaders hardening their positions, the demand for a public debate underscores the growing political stakes around the project. As the controversy continues, the issue is expected to remain a key battleground in Karnataka’s political landscape, with implications for both governance and opposition strategy in the coming months.
