UN Chief’s India Visit To Bring Global Focus To BRICS Summit
UN chief will attend the upcoming BRICS summit in India.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will visit India next week to attend the BRICS Summit, where he is expected to engage with leaders of major emerging economies, his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric announced on Tuesday. Dujarric indicated that the visit had been scheduled and that a formal announcement would follow. The trip will bring Guterres to India for the fifth time during his tenure as UN chief and his second visit to the country this year, following his participation in the India-AI Impact Summit in February.
Guterres was recently in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit, where he attended the gathering but did not hold a formal meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His upcoming India visit will place him alongside several prominent leaders from the BRICS grouping as the bloc holds its summit from September 12.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian are among the leaders expected to attend the summit. The gathering could also provide Guterres with an important opportunity to meet Putin and Xi before his tenure as Secretary-General ends in December, as both leaders are expected to skip the annual high-level UN General Assembly meeting later this month.

The BRICS summit comes amid heightened international tensions, including ongoing conflicts in the Gulf region and Ukraine. Leaders of Iran and the United Arab Emirates, which have been involved in regional tensions, are also expected to participate, placing discussions on global cooperation and international challenges in focus.
India, which is chairing the ten-member BRICS grouping, has chosen “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” as the theme for the summit. The priorities align with several issues Guterres has highlighted during his decade leading the United Nations, including multilateral cooperation, sustainable development and greater resilience in addressing global challenges.
