Trump Says Iran Ceasefire Likely To Hold Despite Strait Of Hormuz Clash

Trump says ceasefire with Iran likely to hold despite renewed naval clashes in Strait of Hormuz.

Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated sharply in the Strait of Hormuz, even as US President Donald Trump insisted that a ceasefire between the two countries is still likely to hold. The developments come amid renewed reports of military exchanges involving naval forces, missiles, and drone activity in one of the world’s most critical shipping routes.

President Trump claimed that at least three US Navy destroyers successfully passed through the Strait of Hormuz while coming under fire from Iranian forces. He stated that US naval units faced missile, drone, and fast-boat attacks, but responded by destroying several attack boats allegedly linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Trump described the US naval presence in the region as a “Wall of Steel,” asserting that American forces maintained control despite the confrontation.

He also issued a strong warning to Tehran, accusing Iranian leadership of being “lunatics” and cautioning that the United States would respond with significantly greater force if Iran failed to agree to a deal quickly. While reiterating his preference for a diplomatic resolution, Trump said further escalation would be “far more violent” if tensions continued.

In contrast, Iranian sources accused US forces of targeting vessels linked to Iran near the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. Tehran also alleged that US airstrikes hit civilian areas in Bandar Khamir, Sirik, and Qeshm Island in southern Iran. Reports from Iranian media further indicated that air defence systems were activated over parts of western Tehran in response to what they described as hostile aerial threats.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that American naval forces operating in the Strait of Hormuz came under missile, drone, and fast-boat attacks. It stated that US forces responded by neutralising incoming threats and striking Iranian military positions believed to be responsible for the attacks. The statement underscored the US position that its actions were defensive in nature and aimed at protecting naval operations in the region.

Despite the escalating rhetoric and competing claims from both sides, President Trump maintained that a ceasefire framework between Washington and Tehran is still intact. However, the latest incidents have raised fresh concerns over stability in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit corridor, where even limited military exchanges have the potential to disrupt international energy markets.
