Trump Announces Up To 100% Tariffs On Imported Drones, Targets China

US President Donald Trump has announced tariffs of up to 100% on imports of unmanned drones and their components, citing national security concerns and the need to reduce the country's reliance on foreign supply chains. The White House said the measure is intended to encourage greater domestic production in the US drone industry, which remains heavily dependent on imports, particularly from China.
Under the new tariff structure, certain unmanned aircraft systems will face duties of up to 100%. The higher rate applies to drones with a take-off weight exceeding 25 kilograms and those equipped with national security-related capabilities, including thermal imaging systems and docking stations. Smaller drones will face a 25% tariff under the measures announced by the Trump administration.
The White House said the tariffs are designed to strengthen domestic manufacturing of drones and their components while reducing dependence on overseas suppliers. Most of the new duties are scheduled to take effect on September 3. The administration has increasingly linked supply-chain dependence in strategic technologies to national security, particularly where Chinese companies have a significant presence in the global market.

China has a dominant position in the international drone industry, with DJI, the Chinese company founded in 2006, accounting for more than two-thirds of the global drone market in recent years, according to several studies. The company's strong position in the sector has made Chinese-made drones a focus of scrutiny in the US over concerns surrounding technology, data security and supply-chain dependence.
The latest US tariff announcement comes amid renewed trade tensions between Washington and Beijing. China last week announced restrictions on drone exports to the United States and blacklisted six companies in response to US trade measures related to forced labour and national security concerns. Beijing's move followed fresh tariffs imposed by Washington on Chinese goods as well as imports from dozens of other countries.
The new duties are expected to add further pressure to the global drone supply chain while encouraging US manufacturers to expand domestic production. The measures also deepen the broader economic and strategic competition between the United States and China over critical technologies. For the drone industry, the impact will depend on how manufacturers, importers and suppliers adjust to the higher costs once the tariffs take effect.
