Trade And Defence Likely To Dominate PM Modi-Trump Meeting Amid Strengthening India-US Ties

Bilateral talks expected to focus on trade and defence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump are set to hold wide-ranging talks on Wednesday on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, with trade, defence cooperation, energy security and critical minerals expected to dominate the agenda. The meeting comes at a crucial juncture as both countries seek to stabilise relations following months of diplomatic and economic friction.

The two leaders exchanged pleasantries and briefly interacted at a gathering of G7 leaders on Tuesday, marking their first face-to-face encounter in 16 months. While details of the conversation were not disclosed, the interaction set the stage for a more substantive bilateral meeting. Modi and Trump last met in person at the White House in February 2025, shortly after Trump began his second term as US president.

Officials familiar with the discussions expect both sides to focus on accelerating negotiations for a proposed bilateral trade agreement. Trade ties have come under strain in recent months following Washington’s decision to impose punitive tariffs on certain Indian goods. The measures triggered concerns in New Delhi and added to a series of disagreements that affected the broader strategic partnership between the two countries.

Defence cooperation is also likely to feature prominently in the talks. India and the United States have significantly expanded military and security collaboration over the past decade, with defence procurement, technology sharing and joint exercises becoming key pillars of the relationship. Discussions may also cover cooperation in energy and the supply of critical minerals, sectors increasingly viewed as essential to economic security and technological development.

The meeting takes place against the backdrop of tensions arising from President Trump’s repeated claims that he played a decisive role in de-escalating the military confrontation between India and Pakistan in May last year. Trump has on several occasions stated that his intervention helped prevent a wider conflict. India, however, has consistently maintained that the cessation of hostilities resulted from direct communication between New Delhi and Islamabad, with no external mediation involved.

Additional irritants have emerged from Washington’s immigration policies, including an increase in H-1B visa fees that has affected Indian professionals seeking employment opportunities in the United States. However, following US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to India last month, both governments have signalled a willingness to rebuild momentum in the partnership. Analysts view the Modi-Trump meeting as an important opportunity to address outstanding concerns and reinforce cooperation across strategic, economic and geopolitical fronts.
