Titagarh bags massive Mumbai Metro deal
Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL) has clinched a monumental Rs 1,598.55-crore contract to manufacture 108 coaches for Mumbai Metro’s Line 6, marking a significant milestone in India’s urban transit expansion. The announcement, made on Monday, underscores TRSL’s growing dominance in the rail mobility sector.
The contract, awarded by NCC Ltd on behalf of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), involves the design, manufacture, supply, installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of 18 train sets, each comprising six coaches. These will serve Line 6, connecting Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli along the Eastern Express Highway. The project includes a two-year defect liability period followed by five years of comprehensive maintenance.
TRSL’s Deputy MD, Pritish Chowdhary, revealed that each coach costs approximately Rs 10-11 crore, with the contract maintaining a healthy 9-10% profit margin. “This margin will improve as we enhance capacity and complete our backwards integration,” Chowdhary told PTI. The design-build phase is slated for completion within 104 weeks, paving the way for the maintenance phase.
