Tim Cook Steps Down as Apple CEO, Hands Over to John Ternus

Apple CEO Tim Cook has stepped down from the company’s top executive position after nearly three decades with the technology giant, passing the leadership baton to John Ternus. Ternus takes over as chief executive on September 1, becoming only the second person to lead Apple as CEO since co-founder Steve Jobs. Cook will move into the role of executive chairman.

Cook marked his departure by paying tribute to Jobs and expressing appreciation for Apple employees. In a farewell memo, he described the company’s staff as “extraordinary” and reflected on his long association with the technology giant. His transition marks the end of a leadership era that began when he succeeded Jobs as CEO in 2011.

Cook assumed the chief executive role only weeks before Jobs died from pancreatic cancer. Over the following years, he oversaw Apple through a period of significant expansion in its product portfolio, services business and global operations. Under his leadership, the company continued to build on the foundation established during Jobs’ tenure while expanding into new areas of technology and services.
