Thane Lok Adalat settles 55,000+ cases worth Rs 205 crore

The National Lok Adalat in Maharashtra’s Thane district achieved a remarkable feat by resolving 55,981 cases, with settlements totaling Rs 205 crore, according to R S Pajankar, secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA). The event, inaugurated by Bombay High Court Justices Advait M Sethna and Manjusha Deshpande, saw 111 benches constituted to address a wide range of disputes, offering swift justice to thousands and easing the burden on the judicial system.
Out of 3,47,204 pending cases, the Lok Adalat took up 2,28,971 matters, successfully settling 55,981. These included 40,244 post-litigation cases, involving Rs 173.81 crore, and 15,737 pre-litigation cases, worth Rs 31.23 crore. The resolved disputes spanned bank recovery matters, criminal compoundable offences, electricity and water bill disputes, motor accident claims, and matrimonial issues, showcasing the Lok Adalat’s versatility in delivering accessible and efficient resolutions.
The Thane Lok Adalat’s success highlights the power of alternative dispute resolution in addressing India’s judicial backlog, particularly for common citizens seeking affordable and timely justice. Pajankar emphasized that the event’s outcomes reflect the DLSA’s commitment to fostering amicable settlements, reducing litigation costs, and promoting harmony. Cases like matrimonial disputes and motor accident claims, often emotionally and financially taxing, were resolved through mutual agreement, offering relief to litigants.
