Tewolde Gebremariam Takes Charge of Air India’s Next Growth Chapter

Former Ethiopian Airlines Group chief executive Tewolde Gebremariam has been appointed as the next chief executive officer and managing director of Air India. He will succeed Campbell Wilson, who submitted his resignation in April but agreed to remain in charge until the airline’s board selected a successor.

Air India said the precise date of Gebremariam’s onboarding and the timetable for transferring responsibilities would be announced later. Before assuming the position, he will require security clearance from the Indian government, a mandatory requirement for foreign-origin executives appointed to senior leadership roles at Indian airlines.

Gebremariam joins Air India with extensive experience in the international aviation industry and is widely associated with Ethiopian Airlines’ expansion into a major global carrier. His appointment brings an experienced airline executive into the Tata Group-owned company as it continues its broader transformation and seeks to strengthen its position in domestic and international aviation.

He replaces New Zealand-born Campbell Wilson, a former Singapore Airlines executive who took charge of Air India following its return to the Tata Group. Wilson remained in the role after tendering his resignation to ensure continuity while the airline conducted its search for a new chief executive.

The leadership transition comes at an important stage for Air India as the carrier manages operational pressures while pursuing its long-term restructuring plans. Gebremariam will be expected to oversee the airline’s strategy, daily operations and international growth after completing the required approvals and formally assuming office.

Further information about the transition schedule, Gebremariam’s joining date and Wilson’s departure will be released in due course. Until then, Wilson is expected to continue leading the airline, with the formal transfer of authority taking place only after the necessary regulatory and security procedures have been completed.
