Techie Quits Rs 3.3 Crore Google Job: "2022 Was Turning Point"

New York techie explains why he left his high-paying Google job.

Kevin Naughton Jr, a New York-based technology professional, has revealed why he left a Google job that paid nearly $350,000, or about Rs 3.3 crore, annually to pursue his own startup. Despite describing Google as one of the best nine-to-five jobs he could have asked for, Naughton said the role did not align with what he ultimately wanted to do with his life. He said he had known from the beginning that he eventually wanted to work for himself.

Naughton said his intention to leave Google was not a sudden decision and that he had considered entrepreneurship from the start of his career there. According to him, he always expected the corporate role to be temporary because his long-term goal was to build something independently. While the job offered strong financial rewards and a stable professional environment, he eventually decided that continuing in the role would not give him the sense of purpose he was looking for.

The biggest turning point came in 2022, when Naughton lost his father. He described the experience as a major wake-up call that forced him to reassess his priorities and think more seriously about how he wanted to spend his time. The loss strengthened his belief that he should focus on work that made him happy rather than remain in a position simply because it offered financial security and professional prestige.

Naughton acknowledged that leaving Google was a significant decision, particularly because of the compensation and stability associated with the job. He called it an excellent nine-to-five position but said it was not the work he wanted to be doing every day. His experience ultimately led him to prioritise personal fulfilment and independence over remaining in a highly sought-after technology job with a substantial annual salary.

However, Naughton did not leave without preparing financially for the transition. He said he is generally conservative when it comes to taking financial risks and therefore spent years building sufficient savings before making the move. His goal was to create several years of financial runway, allowing him to work on his startup without immediately facing pressure to generate income. This preparation helped reduce the financial uncertainty associated with leaving a high-paying job.

A conversation with a close friend eventually helped Naughton take the final step towards entrepreneurship. His decision highlights a growing willingness among some highly paid technology professionals to prioritise independence and personal goals over conventional career progression. For Naughton, the combination of a long-standing desire to work for himself, the personal impact of losing his father and careful financial preparation ultimately gave him the confidence to leave Google and pursue his own venture.
