Tata Sons Succession: Who Will Pick N Chandrasekaran’s Replacement And How

Tata Trusts begin search for Chandrasekaran’s successor.

The process to identify N Chandrasekaran's successor as chairman of Tata Sons has begun, a day after Chandrasekaran announced that he would not seek reappointment for a third term. The Tata Trusts, which collectively hold nearly two-thirds of Tata Sons, have initiated steps to establish a selection committee that will recommend the next chairman of the holding company of the diversified Tata group.

The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT), one of the principal charitable trusts holding shares in Tata Sons, said its trustees had decided to begin the process of constituting the selection committee. The committee will be responsible for identifying and recommending a candidate to succeed Chandrasekaran as chairman of the Tata Sons board. The move formally starts the succession process following his decision not to continue for another term.

The chairman of Tata Sons occupies one of the most influential positions in Indian corporate business because the company is the holding entity for the Tata group and has significant interests across sectors including information technology, automobiles, steel, aviation, consumer products and financial services. The succession process will therefore be closely watched by investors, employees and the wider business community as the group prepares for a leadership transition.

The Tata Trusts specifically acknowledged Chandrasekaran's contribution during what they described as a period of “significant change, growth and transformation” across the Tata group. Chandrasekaran became chairman of Tata Sons in 2017 and has overseen the group's operations during a period that included major expansion in several businesses and important strategic decisions. His decision not to seek a third term now sets the stage for the selection of a new leader.

The selection committee will be tasked with evaluating potential candidates before making its recommendation for the next chairman of the Tata Sons board. The precise composition of the committee and the names of potential candidates have not yet been disclosed. The process is expected to involve consideration of leadership experience, strategic ability and the requirements of managing the complex structure of the Tata group.

The Tata Trusts have a particularly important role in the succession process because of their substantial ownership of Tata Sons. The charitable trusts together control nearly two-thirds of the holding company, giving them significant influence over major decisions concerning its leadership. The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust's decision to begin constituting the selection committee therefore represents an important initial step in determining who will lead Tata Sons after Chandrasekaran.

The succession process will unfold over the coming months, with the selection committee expected to assess suitable candidates and eventually recommend a name for the chairmanship. Until a successor is formally selected and appointed, Chandrasekaran will continue to lead Tata Sons in accordance with the company's existing arrangements. The transition will mark an important change at the top of one of India's largest and most diversified business groups.
