Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Meets MinebeaMitsumi Over Rs 1,980 Crore Semiconductor Project

Tamil Nadu discussed semiconductor investment project with Japan’s MinebeaMitsumi firm.

C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday held discussions with senior executives of Japanese electronics and precision manufacturing firm MinebeaMitsumi regarding the company’s proposed Rs 1,980 crore semiconductor and precision components facility in Tiruvallur district.

According to a statement shared by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Office on X, the meeting took place at the State Secretariat on May 19 and focused on strengthening investment cooperation between the state government and the Japanese company. The proposed manufacturing facility forms part of Tamil Nadu’s broader strategy to attract high-value industrial and semiconductor investments.

The discussions were attended by MinebeaMitsumi Chairman Katsuhiko Yoshida and several senior Japanese and Indian executives associated with the project. Company representatives present at the meeting included Shoji Shishido, Executive Director and Chairman of NMB-Minebea India Private Limited, along with Daesuke Matsuda, Deputy Head Mokka Kyohara and Sam George.

The Chief Minister’s Office said the interaction was part of continued engagement following the earlier signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the Tiruvallur project. Officials discussed investment plans, coordination efforts and the proposed development timeline for the semiconductor and precision components facility.

Tamil Nadu has been actively positioning itself as a major destination for electronics manufacturing and semiconductor-related investments, competing with other Indian states to attract global technology companies. The state government has increased its focus on advanced manufacturing sectors by promoting industrial infrastructure, skilled workforce availability and policy support for international investors.

The proposed project by MinebeaMitsumi is expected to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s growing electronics and semiconductor ecosystem while deepening industrial ties between India and Japan. The investment is also being viewed as part of India’s broader push to expand domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependence on imports in critical technology sectors.
