Talk About Hypocrisy! Russia Urges Restraint Between India and Pakistan!
Russia Urges India-Pakistan Dialogue to Ease Tensions Post-Pahalgam Attack
The irony of the situation is lost in the mayhem of information flying about. In what seems like complete and total hypocracy, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in a Friday phone call with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, urged India and Pakistan to resolve escalating tensions over the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack through diplomacy!
Coming from Russia - at this juncture - as they bomb Kyiv - the joke behind the message doesnt seem to have registered anywhere given the sombre reality facing India's politicos today.
Lavrov cited the 1972 Simla Agreement and 1999 Lahore Declaration in his conversation with Jaishankar. The attack, which killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists, in south Kashmir, has triggered a sharp deterioration in bilateral ties between India and Pakistan.

The Russian embassy stated Lavrov emphasized settling “disagreements” bilaterally, while Jaishankar, posting on X, stressed that the attack’s “perpetrators, backers, and planners must be brought to justice.” The ministers also discussed Russian-Indian cooperation and upcoming high-level engagements.
India attributes the attack to Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, prompting severe measures, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, closing the Attari-Wagah border, banning Pakistani imports, postal services, and ships, and expelling military attaches.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on April 29, granted the armed forces “complete operational freedom” to respond, vowing a “crushing blow” to terrorism. Pakistan, denying involvement, closed its airspace to Indian flights, suspended trade, and test-fired a 450-km missile on Saturday.
Global powers, including the US and EU, have condemned the attack and urged de-escalation, echoing Lavrov’s call for restraint. As nightly LoC skirmishes persist, diplomatic efforts face challenges, with India rejecting Pakistan’s demand for a neutral probe, insisting on accountability for cross-border terrorism.
