Suvendu Announces Adani Group's 2,000-Bed Hospital Project For New Town In West Bengal

Adani announces major hospital project in New Town

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday announced that the Adani Group has committed to setting up a 2,000-bed modern hospital in New Town near Kolkata, with half of its capacity reserved for providing free treatment to economically weaker sections. The announcement was made during an interaction with members of civil society, where the Chief Minister outlined key initiatives undertaken by his government over the past two months.

Speaking at the event, Adhikari said the Adani Group had submitted a written commitment to establish the large healthcare facility. According to him, the proposed hospital will have a total capacity of 2,000 beds, of which 1,000 beds will be earmarked exclusively for free treatment of poor patients, while the remaining 1,000 beds will operate on a commercial basis. He described the project as a major step towards strengthening healthcare infrastructure in the state and expanding access to quality medical services.

"The Adani Group has given a written commitment to build a 2,000-bed modern hospital in New Town. Of these, 1,000 beds will be for the poor and another 1,000 will be used for commercial operation," Adhikari said during the interaction. The programme was organised by the Alipore Citizens' Association in his Bhabanipur Assembly constituency and was attended by members of civil society, professionals and representatives from the business community.

While making the announcement, the Chief Minister did not provide additional details regarding the proposed investment, project cost or construction timeline. The government also did not disclose the exact location of the hospital within New Town or specify when work on the project is expected to begin. Similarly, no information was shared on the operational framework for the free healthcare component or the range of medical specialties that would be offered at the facility.

The proposed hospital, if completed as announced, would rank among the largest healthcare institutions in eastern India. A 2,000-bed capacity would significantly enhance the availability of tertiary healthcare services in the Kolkata metropolitan region, which caters not only to residents of West Bengal but also to patients from neighbouring states and parts of eastern and northeastern India. Large multi-speciality hospitals often play a crucial role in treating complex medical conditions while also supporting medical education, research and specialised diagnostic services.

New Town has emerged over the years as one of the state's fastest-growing urban centres, housing information technology parks, educational institutions, residential townships and several healthcare facilities. The addition of another large hospital would further strengthen the area's position as a key destination for healthcare services. The location also offers good connectivity to Kolkata and nearby districts through an expanding road network and public transport infrastructure.

The announcement reflects the increasing role of private sector participation in developing healthcare infrastructure across India. Large corporate groups have been investing in hospitals, medical colleges and specialised healthcare centres in various states, often working alongside government initiatives to improve access to quality treatment. The proposal to reserve 1,000 beds for free treatment is particularly significant, as it suggests an emphasis on making advanced healthcare accessible to economically disadvantaged sections of society, although details regarding eligibility criteria, funding arrangements and patient selection have not yet been made public.

As of now, the project remains at the announcement stage. Neither the Adani Group nor the West Bengal government has issued a detailed project blueprint or official timeline for implementation. Further information regarding investment, construction schedules, regulatory approvals and operational plans is expected once the project progresses beyond the initial commitment. Until then, the proposed hospital represents one of the most significant healthcare infrastructure announcements made in the state in recent months, with its eventual execution likely to be closely watched by policymakers, the medical community and the public alike.
