Suspended Punjab DIG Bhullar Denied Bail in Graft Case

Punjab and Haryana High Court rejects bail plea of suspended DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar in corruption case.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has rejected the bail plea of suspended Punjab Police DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar, who is lodged in Chandigarh Model Jail in connection with a corruption case. The decision comes after Bhullar had approached the High Court seeking regular bail earlier this year.

Bhullar filed his plea on January 9, stating that the investigation into the case had already been completed and the final report was submitted on December 3 last year. He argued that there was no need for further custodial interrogation, as all evidence had been collected.

In his petition, filed through counsel Nikhil Ghai, Bhullar claimed that the prosecution primarily intended to examine official witnesses and the complainant. He emphasized that, being suspended from service, he could not influence witnesses or tamper with evidence.

The DIG further pointed out that the complainant had already been provided protection under previous High Court orders. He contended that the alleged trap was related to a co-accused and did not involve any direct acceptance of money or recovery from him personally.

Despite these arguments, the High Court denied the bail, citing the need to ensure the integrity of the ongoing legal process. Bhullar continues to remain in custody as the case progresses through the judicial system. The development marks a significant moment in the high-profile investigation into alleged corruption within the Punjab Police, drawing attention to accountability measures for senior law enforcement officials.
