Sukhpal Singh Bhullar's Multi-Crop Innovation Generates Rs 12 Lakh Per Acre in Bathinda Farm

Bathinda farmer Sukhpal Singh Bhullar generates Rs 12 lakh per acre through diversified, data-driven farming.

A 61-year-old farmer from Bathinda district is redefining traditional agriculture through a data-driven and diversified approach, demonstrating how innovation can significantly enhance farm productivity and profitability. Sukhpal Singh Bhullar, who once struggled with debt, now operates a high-efficiency farming enterprise that generates over ₹12 lakh per acre, with ambitions to increase this figure further in the coming year.

At his 36-acre farm in Ghuman Kalan village near Maur Mandi, Bhullar has transformed conventional farming into a precision-based system that maximises output from every unit of land. By carefully planning crop cycles and using modern agricultural techniques, he has created a model that balances productivity with sustainability, offering an alternative to traditional single-crop farming practices common in the region.

His farm integrates a wide range of produce, including kinnow orchards and dragon fruit cultivation, alongside seasonal vegetable intercropping. Bhullar has also experimented with high-value crops such as saffron grown in controlled environments, as well as pearl farming, ensuring multiple revenue streams and reducing dependence on any single crop.

This diversified strategy allows him to maintain consistent income throughout the year while mitigating risks associated with market fluctuations and climate uncertainties. By combining traditional knowledge with modern data and experimentation, Bhullar has turned his farm into a resilient and scalable agricultural model that can adapt to changing conditions.

Beyond financial success, Bhullar is also using his experience to send a broader message about opportunities within Indian agriculture. He encourages young people, including those who have migrated abroad, to reconsider farming as a viable and rewarding profession when approached with innovation and planning.

His journey highlights the growing importance of diversification and technology in agriculture, particularly in regions like Punjab where monocropping has long dominated. As challenges such as soil degradation and market volatility persist, Bhullar’s model offers a compelling example of how farmers can enhance income while ensuring sustainable use of resources.
