SpiceJet Reports Delayed Salary Payments For Pilots Since March
SpiceJet delays pilot salaries as financial stress continues.
SpiceJet, once among India’s leading domestic airlines, is reportedly facing continued financial strain, with salary payments to several pilots delayed since March, according to internal communications and employee accounts reviewed by Reuters. The developments come as the airline seeks financial support through a government-backed credit mechanism to stabilise its operations amid ongoing cash-flow pressures.
As of March, SpiceJet’s pilot strength stood at 375, and multiple crew members have reportedly confirmed that salary disbursements have been pending for several months. Internal messages circulated in a WhatsApp group of over 180 members, including pilots operating Boeing aircraft and at least one senior official, indicated growing concern within the workforce regarding delayed payments.
In one of the messages cited by Reuters, SpiceJet’s Senior Vice President of Flight Operations, Virendra Malhotra, acknowledged the financial difficulties faced by employees due to delayed salaries. He stated that remaining payments for February would be released shortly and described the situation as temporary but challenging. However, when contacted separately, Malhotra denied issuing such communication, according to the report.

The airline, which held a 15% domestic market share in 2019 as India’s second-largest carrier, has since slipped to fourth position, with its market share falling to around 3.4%. The decline reflects broader financial and operational pressures that have impacted its competitiveness in the domestic aviation sector over recent years.
SpiceJet has attributed its liquidity challenges to “extraneous factors,” including disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which it says have affected cash flows. The airline has stated that it is working to normalise operations and has begun disbursing employee salaries in a phased manner, with a majority of staff reportedly receiving payments for March.
Despite these assurances, uncertainty remains among employees, with some pilots seeking clarity on the timeline for pending salary releases for March, April and May. The situation highlights ongoing financial stress within the airline as it attempts to restructure and stabilise its operations in a highly competitive aviation market.
