SpaceX Acquires AI Startup Cursor For $60 Billion, Makes 25-Year-Old CEO A Billionaire

SpaceX acquires AI coding startup Cursor for $60 billion in all-stock deal.

Michael Truell, the 25-year-old co-founder and chief executive of AI coding startup Anysphere, has emerged as one of the youngest self-made billionaires in the artificial intelligence industry following SpaceX's agreement to acquire the company in a $60 billion all-stock transaction. Announced on June 16, the deal ranks among the largest acquisitions in the AI sector and marks a remarkable rise for a startup that was founded just four years ago. Under the agreement, Anysphere, the parent company of the popular AI coding platform Cursor, will become a wholly owned subsidiary of SpaceX.

The acquisition follows a strategic partnership signed between the two companies in April 2026. The agreement reportedly gave SpaceX the option of either purchasing Cursor for $60 billion or paying a $10 billion collaboration fee. SpaceX ultimately chose to proceed with the acquisition, strengthening its artificial intelligence capabilities and expanding the broader AI ecosystem linked to Elon Musk's ventures, including xAI.

Industry observers view Cursor as one of the fastest-growing software platforms in the world. The acquisition provides SpaceX with access to advanced AI-powered coding technology while giving Cursor access to substantial computing resources, including xAI's large-scale AI infrastructure. The combination is expected to enhance the development of next-generation software engineering tools and increase competition within the rapidly evolving AI coding market.

Born and raised in New York City, Truell developed an interest in programming at a young age and taught himself coding when he was 11 years old. He later attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where his technical abilities attracted the attention of prominent investor Ali Partovi. Truell also completed an internship at Google, working on machine-learning language models before leaving MIT in 2022 to launch Anysphere with classmates Aman Sanger, Sualeh Asif and Arvid Lunnemark.

Cursor's success was not immediate. The founding team initially explored building an AI assistant for mechanical engineers before shifting focus to software development. Backed by major investors, including the OpenAI Startup Fund and Andreessen Horowitz, the company experienced rapid growth. It surpassed $100 million in annualized recurring revenue in early 2025 and reportedly expanded to nearly $3 billion in annual recurring revenue by mid-2026 while maintaining a relatively lean workforce.

Today, Cursor is widely used by enterprises and software developers for its AI-powered integrated development environment, which assists with coding, editing, automation and software generation. The platform's adoption by major corporations helped establish it as a leading AI software product. With the completion of the SpaceX acquisition, Anysphere has secured its place among the defining technology success stories of the decade, while Michael Truell has become one of the most prominent young entrepreneurs in the global AI industry.
