Southwest Airlines Launches Global Innovation Centre In Hyderabad For AI And Engineering

Southwest Airlines opens global innovation centre in Hyderabad.

US-based carrier Southwest Airlines has launched its first global innovation centre outside the United States in Hyderabad, marking a major expansion of its international technology and engineering footprint. The facility is expected to strengthen the airline’s digital and operational capabilities as it expands its focus on advanced aviation technologies and data-driven systems.

The new centre was inaugurated on Wednesday by Telangana IT Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu and will operate under Southwest Airlines India Private Limited. Officials said the initiative reflects Hyderabad’s growing status as a global hub for aviation, aerospace, and technology-driven innovation, with several multinational companies already establishing major operations in the city.

According to the company, the Hyderabad facility will support key functions including technology development, engineering, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, analytics, and digital operations. The centre is also expected to play a critical role in enhancing Southwest Airlines’ global aviation network through improved digital infrastructure and next-generation platform development.

The airline has announced plans to scale the centre to more than 1,000 engineers and technology professionals in the coming years. The hub will focus on areas such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, data science, enterprise systems, and advanced digital engineering, aligning with broader industry trends toward automation and intelligent aviation systems.

Company executives said Hyderabad was selected due to its strong talent pool in engineering, analytics, and emerging technologies. Southwest Airlines Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer Lauren Woods said the city provides a strong ecosystem for innovation and will support the airline’s next phase of global digital transformation.

Officials in Telangana said the development further reinforces Hyderabad’s position as a preferred destination for global capability centres, particularly in high-value sectors such as aviation technology and deep-tech innovation. The new centre is expected to contribute significantly to local employment while strengthening India’s role in global aviation engineering and digital services.
