South Bay Disturbance Set to Impact Tamil Nadu Weather This Week
Weather officials forecast rainfall across Tamil Nadu as low-pressure forms over South Bay.
A low-pressure area forming over the south Bay of Bengal is expected to bring rainfall across parts of Tamil Nadu beginning February 20, according to meteorological assessments. The system, currently developing over the southeastern Bay, is likely to influence coastal and interior districts over the coming days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the low-pressure system may intensify slightly as it moves west-northwestward, enhancing moisture incursion over Tamil Nadu. Under its influence, scattered to moderate rainfall is forecast in several districts, with isolated heavier spells possible along coastal belts.
Chennai and adjoining districts could experience light to moderate showers, while southern districts such as Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram may see more consistent rainfall activity. Wind speeds along the coast are also expected to pick up temporarily, prompting advisories for fishermen venturing into the south Bay of Bengal.

February typically marks a relatively drier transition phase in Tamil Nadu following the northeast monsoon season. However, synoptic systems such as low-pressure areas over the Bay of Bengal can still trigger off-season rainfall events, particularly in the southern and coastal parts of the state.
Authorities are closely monitoring the system’s trajectory and intensity. While widespread disruption is not anticipated at this stage, local administrations have advised residents to stay updated with official bulletins, especially in districts prone to waterlogging. Further clarity on the extent and distribution of rainfall is expected as the system evolves over the next 48 hours.
