Shipping Lines Explore Vizag Port For West Asia Cargo Transhipment
Shipping lines consider Vizag Port for West Asia transhipment.
Several global shipping lines are exploring the possibility of using Visakhapatnam Port as a transhipment hub for cargo bound for West Asia, a move that could strengthen India’s position in regional maritime trade and reduce dependence on foreign ports.
Industry officials said shipping companies are assessing the port’s strategic location along major international sea routes, along with its capacity to handle large container vessels. If the plan materialises, cargo from eastern and southern India could be consolidated at Visakhapatnam before being shipped onward to markets in the West Asia, improving efficiency in logistics and freight movement.
The development comes as India seeks to expand the role of its ports in global shipping networks and reduce reliance on major transhipment hubs such as Colombo Port in Sri Lanka, where a significant portion of Indian container traffic is currently handled. Creating domestic transhipment capacity is seen as crucial for lowering costs and strengthening supply chain resilience.

Officials associated with the port said ongoing upgrades in container handling facilities, deeper drafts for larger ships, and improved connectivity through rail and road networks have made Visakhapatnam increasingly attractive to international shipping operators. Authorities are also examining policy incentives and operational changes to encourage more carriers to use the port.
Maritime analysts note that growing trade flows between India and countries in the Middle East, particularly in energy, manufactured goods, and agricultural exports, have increased demand for efficient transhipment points. Establishing Visakhapatnam as a hub could help streamline cargo movement for exporters and importers across the region.
If shipping lines move forward with the proposal, Visakhapatnam Port could see higher container volumes and increased global connectivity, boosting economic activity in Andhra Pradesh and reinforcing India’s broader maritime development strategy under initiatives aimed at modernising port infrastructure and logistics systems.
