Shashi Tharoor Was Headed To Kathmandu When Nepal Floods Caused Widespread Chaos

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor reached Kathmandu on Wednesday while largely unaware of the devastating flash floods that had struck northern Nepal, later expressing concern over the deaths and extensive destruction caused by the disaster. Tharoor said he was “blissfully unaware” of the drama unfolding in the country as he travelled towards the Nepalese capital. Tharoor arrived in Kathmandu as the Himalayan nation was dealing with the aftermath of severe flooding and destruction in several areas. The disaster has caused significant loss of life and left authorities facing an extensive rescue and relief operation.
The Congress leader said he only became aware of the scale of the situation after reaching Kathmandu. The incident came amid reports of widespread devastation caused by flash floods in northern Nepal. Several areas were affected, with infrastructure and travel routes disrupted by the sudden flooding. The disaster has also triggered concern in India because a large number of Indian tourists, pilgrims and other travellers regularly visit Nepal. Tharoor subsequently expressed concern over the deaths and destruction caused by the floods.
His remarks came as authorities continued efforts to assess the damage and locate people who remained missing following the disaster. The scale of the emergency has made transportation and communication difficult in some affected areas. The Congress MP’s account highlighted how quickly the situation had developed while he was travelling to Kathmandu. He said he had not been aware of what had unfolded in Nepal until he arrived, describing himself as “blissfully unaware” of the events taking place around him.
