Sensex, Nifty Outlook For October 8: Major Developments That Could Influence Trading Today

Key market cues before October 8

Indian benchmark equity indices are set for a cautious opening on Thursday, October 8, after global markets weakened and domestic equities ended a two-session winning streak in the previous session. GIFT Nifty indicated a negative start, with the contract trading around the 22,556 level in early trade, pointing to pressure on the Nifty 50 and Sensex at the opening bell. The market backdrop remains challenging as investors assess elevated crude oil prices, higher US Treasury yields and the impact of the Reserve Bank of India's latest monetary policy decision. The Indian market ended lower on Wednesday after the RBI raised its repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and shifted its policy stance towards calibrated tightening.

The Nifty 50 declined 173.05 points, or 0.76%, to close at 22,603.05, while the Sensex fell 429.11 points, or 0.59%, to finish at 72,638.70. The policy shift has added another layer of uncertainty for investors, particularly as markets weigh the implications of higher domestic borrowing costs alongside pressure from global bond yields and commodity prices. Global cues are also likely to influence trading sentiment. US equities closed lower on Wednesday as longer-dated Treasury yields moved higher, with concerns over inflation, government borrowing and elevated oil prices weighing on risk appetite. Asian markets were also trading lower on Thursday.

Rising bond yields can increase financing costs and put pressure on equity valuations, while higher crude prices can raise concerns about inflation and corporate margins, particularly for oil-importing economies such as India. Crude oil remains a key variable for Indian investors. Brent crude moved above the $100-per-barrel mark amid concerns over supply disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions, adding to inflationary pressure across global markets. For India, sustained higher oil prices can affect the country's import bill, the rupee and corporate profitability while potentially complicating the monetary policy outlook. Investors will therefore track movements in crude, the currency market and global bond yields closely during Thursday's session.

Market participants will also track stock-specific developments, corporate announcements and trading activity from foreign and domestic institutional investors. Foreign institutional investors remained net sellers in the previous session, while domestic institutions continued to provide buying support. On the derivatives front, the 22,800 level emerged as a significant call open-interest zone, while 22,200 had the highest put open interest, highlighting the range traders could monitor for signs of a directional move. The Nifty's ability to hold above key support levels while dealing with elevated volatility will remain important for the broader market trend.

For Thursday's trade, investors are likely to balance weak global signals against domestic factors, including earnings-related developments and the market's response to the RBI's policy shift. GIFT Nifty's indication of a weaker opening does not necessarily determine the full-day direction, but it points to caution at the start of the session. With crude oil above $100, US Treasury yields elevated and foreign selling continuing, traders may remain watchful for volatility. At the same time, any improvement in global markets, easing oil prices or stronger domestic buying could influence the market's direction during the session.
