Senior Executive Deepak Gupta Assumes Leadership at GAIL (India) Limited
New Chapter Begins at GAIL Under Deepak Gupta amid ongoing energy sector expansion.
Deepak Gupta, a veteran executive with over 35 years of experience in the oil and gas sector, assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of GAIL (India) Limited on March 1, 2026. The appointment, approved by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, marks a seamless leadership transition for India's largest natural gas transmission and marketing company. Gupta succeeds Sandeep Kumar Gupta, who superannuated on February 28, 2026, after steering the firm through significant growth in infrastructure and clean energy initiatives.
Gupta, who previously served as Director (Projects) at GAIL since February 2022, brings extensive expertise in leading large-scale projects, global procurement, operations, and technology-driven transformations. During his tenure as Director (Projects), he oversaw the expansion of natural gas and LPG pipelines, gas processing facilities, SCADA infrastructure, green energy projects, and the operations and maintenance of GAIL's vast 20,000+ km pipeline network. He also played a key role in strategic joint ventures, including Talcher Fertilizers, ONGC Petro additions Limited (OPaL), Shell Energy and Gas Projects, Green Gas Limited, and Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited. His contributions include the successful completion of the Dabhol Breakwater Project, enhancing GAIL's operational resilience.
The handover comes at a pivotal time for GAIL, as the company advances India's energy transition goals, including expanding natural gas infrastructure to support the national target of increasing gas in the primary energy mix to 15% by 2030. Under the new leadership, GAIL is expected to prioritize sustainability, diversification into renewables, and strengthening its position in gas transmission, distribution, petrochemicals, and city gas distribution networks. Gupta's internal promotion ensures continuity in ongoing initiatives while allowing fresh momentum in execution.
