SCO Summit: PM Modi And Putin To Discuss Key Issues During Bishkek Meeting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to hold bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday. The meeting is expected to cover key issues concerning India-Russia ties as well as important regional and global developments. Modi will travel to Uzbekistan from August 29 to 30 before heading to Kyrgyzstan for the SCO summit, scheduled to take place in Bishkek from August 31 to September 1, according to the MEA.

The upcoming engagement with Putin will be closely watched as the two countries continue to maintain extensive diplomatic, economic, defence and energy ties. The bilateral meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for the two leaders to review the overall state of India-Russia relations and discuss areas of mutual interest. While the MEA did not provide details of the agenda, it said the discussions would include bilateral, regional and global issues. The leaders could also exchange views on developments affecting their respective strategic interests. Modi and Putin have maintained regular high-level contact over the years, with their meetings often covering defence cooperation, energy, trade and broader geopolitical developments.

India has continued to engage with Russia while also maintaining relationships with the United States, European countries and other major global powers. The meeting assumes significance because of the wider geopolitical environment in which India-Russia relations are being conducted. Moscow's relations with Western countries remain strained, while India has sought to maintain its strategic autonomy and keep communication channels open with major powers.
