Russian Diplomat Criticises US-Israel Attack On Iran, Raises Legal Concerns

Russia condemns strikes, warns of escalation and legal violations.

Russian diplomat Roman Babushkin, Charge d'Affaires at the Russian Embassy in India, condemned the US-Israel military attacks on Iran as "illegal, unjustified, and barbaric," warning of widespread global repercussions. Babushkin described the conflict—initiated by US-Israel strikes on February 28—as aggressive unilateral actions violating international law and the UN Charter. He rejected claims tied to Iran's nuclear program, citing no verifiable evidence from global agencies, and emphasized that "no one is benefiting" from the crisis, which has spiked oil prices and disrupted key routes like the Strait of Hormuz.

Russia's UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia echoed this at an emergency Security Council session, labeling the strikes "another unprovoked act of armed aggression" against a sovereign state. He blamed Washington and Tel Aviv for regional escalation, betraying diplomacy amid ongoing nuclear talks, and highlighted interference in Iran's internal affairs.

The attacks, dubbed Operation Shield of Judah and Operation Epic Fury, targeted Iranian nuclear sites and leadership, with US President Donald Trump and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu citing regime change and existential threats. Critics argue they contravene sovereignty principles, occurring just days after Geneva negotiations on Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Babushkin noted Russia's diplomatic outreach to all parties, including Iran, Israel, the US, and Gulf states, offering mediation for peace. He underscored shared India-Russia interests in stable energy markets, amid reports of India's Russian oil imports rising 45% this month despite volatility.

The conflict risks broader instability, with potential impacts on global supply chains. As Russia pushes for de-escalation, its stance aligns with calls for ceasefire, contrasting US-Israel defenses amid Iran's retaliatory strikes on regional targets.
