Report: Siddaramaiah Seeks Cabinet Position for Son Yathindra in Karnataka Transition

Siddaramaiah reportedly seeks Cabinet role for son Yathindra.

Outgoing Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has reportedly sought a significant organisational adjustment within the state’s upcoming Congress-led government, with sources indicating that he has pushed for a Deputy Chief Minister position for his son and MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah. According to political sources cited in reports, the demand was raised during Siddaramaiah’s recent engagements with the Congress high command in Delhi, as the party finalises the leadership transition in Karnataka.

The move is being interpreted within party circles as an attempt to preserve the influence of Siddaramaiah’s faction in the new power structure, which is expected to be headed by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. The transition follows Siddaramaiah’s resignation as Chief Minister after directions from the Congress leadership, formally ending his tenure and triggering a reconfiguration of the state cabinet. While the Congress has managed to resolve the leadership question, internal negotiations over cabinet balance, factional representation, and key posts such as Deputy Chief Minister and KPCC leadership are still ongoing.

Party insiders suggest that Siddaramaiah’s proposal is also linked to broader organisational concerns, including uncertainty over who will assume control of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). Reports indicate that some senior leaders are reluctant to take on the KPCC role, which has further complicated the distribution of responsibilities in the post-transition government. In this context, accommodating multiple power centres within the cabinet is being viewed as a mechanism to maintain internal equilibrium.

Yathindra Siddaramaiah, currently a Member of the Legislative Council, has been gradually emerging as a political figure in his own right, though his elevation to a constitutional executive post such as Deputy Chief Minister would represent a significant acceleration in his political trajectory. Within the Congress ecosystem, such a move would also be politically sensitive, as it intersects with long-standing debates around dynastic representation versus organisational merit.

The reported discussions come amid a broader round of consultations between Karnataka leaders and the Congress central leadership in New Delhi. Siddaramaiah has held multiple meetings with senior party figures, including discussions involving ministers and close political associates, focusing not only on government formation but also on upcoming legislative priorities such as Rajya Sabha nominations and portfolio allocation.

Meanwhile, the party is preparing for a formal Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting in Bengaluru, where MLAs are expected to finalise the contours of the new administration. The meeting is likely to determine final cabinet composition, including the number of Deputy Chief Ministers, ministerial allocations, and regional representation balances across Karnataka. Despite the internal negotiations, Congress leaders have publicly maintained that the transition is proceeding smoothly and that the party’s majority in the state assembly remains stable.

Siddaramaiah, after stepping down, has also stated that the party continues to enjoy a comfortable mandate in Karnataka and expressed gratitude to both the leadership and the electorate for his tenure. The final decision on cabinet structure and whether Siddaramaiah’s request is accommodated will likely depend on the Congress high command’s balancing of factional interests within the state unit, particularly the equilibrium between the Siddaramaiah camp and the Shivakumar-led bloc.
