Reliance Infra Secures Major NHPC Solar-BESS Project

390 MW solar, 780 MWh BESS secured

Reliance Infrastructure Ltd has clinched a significant contract from NHPC, a leading Navratna public sector enterprise, for a 390 MW solar power project integrated with a 780 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), reinforcing its dominance in India’s renewable energy sector. The project, awarded through a competitive e-reverse auction, carries a winning tariff of ₹3.13 per kWh, making it one of India’s most cost-effective solar-plus-storage initiatives.

Upon completion, the project will add 700 MWp of solar DC capacity and 780 MWh of BESS capacity to Reliance Group’s portfolio, elevating its total clean energy pipeline to over 3 GWp of solar and 3.5 GWh of BESS. This cements Reliance Group’s position as India’s largest integrated solar and BESS player, surpassing its existing 2.5 GWp solar and 2.5 GWh BESS capacity managed by Reliance Power.

The project is part of NHPC’s ambitious 1,200 MW solar and 600 MW/2,400 MWh BESS tender, connected to the interstate transmission system (ISTS). The tender attracted 15 bidders, with 14 qualifying for the auction, which was oversubscribed nearly fourfold, signaling robust industry demand for dispatchable renewable energy solutions that enhance grid stability.

Reliance Infrastructure, a key player in India’s infrastructure landscape, develops projects through Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) in sectors like power, roads, metro rail, and defense. Notable projects include the Mumbai Metro, executed on a Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) basis, and multiple road projects on a Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) model. The company’s shares rose 2.73% to ₹269.00 on the BSE following the announcement, reflecting investor optimism.

This win aligns with India’s renewable energy goals, aiming for 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. The integration of BESS ensures consistent power supply, addressing the intermittency of solar energy and supporting grid reliability.
