Realme India Faces Job Cuts, Oppo Consolidation Hits Sales, Support Teams

Oppo reportedly cuts jobs in Realme India sales and support teams as consolidation continues post re-merger.

Oppo is reportedly carrying out job cuts within Realme’s India operations as part of a broader consolidation strategy aimed at reducing costs and streamlining business functions. The reported layoffs come shortly after Realme rejoined Oppo as a sub-brand, a move that was positioned as a way to pool resources and lower operational overheads.

According to a report by Moneycontrol, Oppo has begun absorbing several of Realme India’s teams, starting with sales and support divisions. Sources cited in the report claim that employees in these units have been asked to align with a revised organisational structure, with some reportedly being asked to resign by April 30. The consolidation is said to be phased, with additional Realme India teams expected to be affected in the coming months, although the exact scope remains unclear.

The report adds that Oppo has already undertaken a similar consolidation of Realme’s operations in China. In India, however, the company is reportedly proceeding more cautiously due to ongoing legal and regulatory issues. While sales and support teams are the first to be impacted, research, product and other business verticals could also face restructuring as Oppo works toward integrating overlapping functions.

Industry observers note that the layoffs, while difficult for those affected, are not entirely unexpected. When Oppo and Realme announced their re-merger earlier this year, both companies cited the need to reduce duplication, pool research and development resources, and improve operational efficiency. Such integration typically results in workforce rationalisation, particularly where teams perform similar roles.

A comparable move was reportedly carried out in 2021, when Oppo and OnePlus consolidated operations in India, leading to layoffs across several OnePlus teams. That precedent has fuelled expectations of further restructuring across Oppo’s sub-brands as it seeks a leaner organisational model.

Realme was founded by Sky Li in 2018 and initially operated alongside Oppo under BBK Electronics before becoming an independent brand. Recent reports suggest the company has returned under Oppo’s umbrella to manage rising costs and intensifying competition in the smartphone market, although neither Oppo nor Realme has officially commented on the reported layoffs or restructuring plans in India.
