Rama Duwaji: The Gen Z Artist Behind New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Victory Story
Rama Duwaji becomes New York’s first Gen Z First Lady and a rising voice in art and activism.
Rama Duwaji has made history alongside her husband, New York’s newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani, by becoming the first Gen Z First Lady of the city. At just 28, the Syrian-American illustrator and activist has already carved a place for herself in both art and politics, serving as an influential force behind Mamdani’s campaign success. Known for staying away from the spotlight, Duwaji has quietly helped shape her husband’s public image, focusing on his digital branding and social media strategy, which played a key role in his decisive victory over Andrew Cuomo.
A graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York, Duwaji holds a Master of Fine Arts in Illustration. Her work, which celebrates Arab identity and confronts themes of resistance, sisterhood, and political justice, has appeared in global publications such as The New Yorker, The Washington Post, BBC, and VICE. Her distinctive artistic style, combining portraiture and movement, captures the experiences of Middle Eastern women while advocating for social and political awareness.
Born in Texas and raised in Dubai, Duwaji describes herself as ethnically Syrian. She met Mamdani on a dating app, and the couple later held a private engagement and Nikkah ceremony in Dubai in December 2024, followed by a City Hall wedding in New York earlier this year. Mamdani often credits his wife as a cornerstone of his personal strength and creative inspiration, once describing her as “an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms.”

Duwaji’s influence extends beyond her marriage and into powerful cultural spaces. Her vibrant blue-and-white ceramic works, paired with politically charged illustrations, carry outspoken pro-Palestinian messages and criticism of Western complicity in Middle Eastern conflicts. Quoting legendary musician Nina Simone, she describes her purpose as reflecting the times through her art. Her Instagram platform, boasting over 235,000 followers, showcases a mix of artwork, political reflections, and snippets of her creative process, establishing her as a distinctive voice within both Gen Z activism and global art circles.
As Zohran Mamdani settles into his historic role as New York City’s first Indian-American Muslim mayor, Duwaji’s emergence as an equally influential cultural figure marks a new chapter for the city’s leadership. Balancing art, activism, and advocacy, the new First Lady is redefining what it means to stand behind — and beside — power in one of the world’s most dynamic metropolises.
