Rajnath Singh says AI is Like Bhasmasur and Must be Handled with Caution

Rajnath Singh says AI is like Bhasmasur, not just a rosy tool.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday cautioned against uncritical adoption of artificial intelligence, comparing the rapidly evolving technology to the mythological figure Bhasmasur and warning that its potential risks must be carefully managed.

Speaking at a public event, Singh said that while artificial intelligence offers transformative benefits across sectors, it also carries the possibility of misuse if left unchecked. He noted that policymakers and technologists must remain vigilant, emphasizing that one “cannot just see the rosy picture” when it comes to emerging technologies.

Drawing on the story of Bhasmasur—a demon who could destroy anyone by placing his hand on their head—Singh suggested that powerful innovations can become dangerous if not governed properly. The analogy was used to underline the dual-use nature of AI, particularly in defence and security contexts.

Rajnath Singh highlighted the need for robust regulatory frameworks and ethical guidelines to ensure responsible deployment of AI systems. He stressed that global cooperation would be essential in addressing challenges such as autonomous weapons, misinformation, and cybersecurity threats.

The remarks come amid increasing global debate over AI governance, with governments and international bodies working to strike a balance between innovation and regulation. India has also been actively exploring frameworks to promote safe and inclusive AI development while safeguarding national interests.

Singh’s comments reflect a broader consensus that while artificial intelligence holds immense promise for economic growth and technological advancement, its unchecked expansion could pose significant risks, making oversight and accountability critical in shaping its future trajectory.
