Quantum Tech Breakthroughs Unveiled at Kolkata Summit for MRI and GPS Revolution

Kolkata hosts global summit showcasing next-gen quantum tech for MRI and GPS.

The International Conference and Exposition on Quantum Sensing and Metrology (ICEQSM) 2025, held at the Bose Institute Auditorium, concluded recently, spotlighting transformative advances in quantum technology poised to enhance MRI scans, GPS navigation, and more. Organized by the Centre for Quantum Engineering, Research and Education (CQuERE) at TCG CREST, the four-day global event united scientists, technologists, entrepreneurs, and students, aligning with the United Nations’ International Year of Quantum Science and Technology and India’s National Quantum Mission launched in 2024.

The conference highlighted quantum innovations with real-world applications, including drift-free GPS systems and faster, clearer MRI scans. Suprakash Das, Director of Finance & Operations at TCG CREST, emphasized the event’s significance: “ICEQSM 2025 connected complex quantum science to everyday challenges, from navigation tools for farmers to climate monitoring and sharper medical imaging. Hosting this in Kolkata underscores India’s emergence as a hub for collaborative quantum research.”

A key focus was bridging academia and industry, with discussions on translating laboratory prototypes into market-ready products. Sessions explored quantum sensors, cold atom interferometers, and quantum-enhanced navigation, with applications spanning healthcare, defense, and climate monitoring. Dr. Tanmoy Basu, Assistant Professor at TCG CREST and a National Quantum Mission member, presented research on nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond for multimodal sensors, noting, “From navigation to biomedical applications, the possibilities are immense, and Kolkata is at the heart of this global dialogue.”
