Russia Offers to Mediate Iran-US Nuclear Talks as Second Round Looms
Russia has expressed readiness to facilitate a potential nuclear agreement between Iran and the United States, emphasizing that any deal must respect Iran’s interests, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated on Friday, April 18, 2025.
The offer comes ahead of a second round of indirect talks between Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, scheduled for Saturday in Rome, following initial discussions in Oman last week.
Iran praised Russia’s role in the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which curbed Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, and expressed hope for Moscow’s continued support in new negotiations.

“We will keep Russia and China informed,” Araghchi said, noting that constructive feedback could aid progress. Lavrov affirmed Russia’s willingness to mediate, stating, “We are ready to help, provided the agreement focuses exclusively on nuclear issues.”
The talks, initiated under U.S. President Donald Trump’s pressure, including threats of military action and secondary tariffs, aim to address Iran’s advancing nuclear program, now enriching uranium to 60% purity—near weapons-grade levels—since the JCPOA’s collapse in 2018.
A key sticking point is the U.S. proposal to transfer Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile to a third country like Russia, which Tehran is expected to reject. Russia’s Kremlin declined to comment on accepting the stockpile.
While Iran insists on discussing only its nuclear program and sanctions relief, the U.S. seeks to eliminate enrichment and weaponization capabilities, with Witkoff recently reversing earlier flexibility on partial enrichment. Russia’s mediation could bridge gaps, but hardline stances, including Israel’s call for a “Libya-style” dismantling, complicate prospects.
