Private Tankers Meet 80% Water Demand at Technopark amid Water Shortage

Technopark relies on private tankers for 80% water amid shortage.

Technopark, one of India’s largest IT hubs, is grappling with a severe water shortage, forcing companies to rely heavily on private tankers that now meet nearly 80 per cent of the campus’s daily water demand, according to officials and industry sources.

The crisis has disrupted routine operations across several firms within the sprawling technology park, which houses hundreds of companies and thousands of employees. With piped water supply proving insufficient, management authorities and private vendors have stepped in to ensure continuity, though at significantly higher operational costs.

Officials said the shortage has been triggered by a combination of declining groundwater levels and inadequate supply from public sources, issues that have worsened in recent weeks. The dependency on tanker water has surged as existing infrastructure struggles to keep pace with the park’s growing requirements, particularly during peak summer conditions.

Companies operating within Technopark have raised concerns over the long-term sustainability of such arrangements. Apart from escalating expenses, the reliance on private suppliers has also introduced uncertainty around consistent availability, prompting firms to adopt conservation measures and optimise water usage within their premises.

Authorities are reportedly exploring both short-term and long-term solutions to address the crisis. Immediate measures include increasing tanker supply and improving water distribution systems within the campus. In the longer term, proposals such as enhancing rainwater harvesting, expanding storage capacity, and strengthening connections with municipal supply networks are under consideration.

The situation has also drawn attention to broader urban water management challenges in Thiruvananthapuram, where rapid urbanisation and rising demand are placing pressure on existing resources. Experts say that without structural improvements and sustainable planning, similar shortages could affect other major institutions and residential areas.

As Technopark continues to depend on tanker deliveries to sustain operations, the episode underscores the urgent need for resilient infrastructure in key economic hubs, particularly those driving the state’s digital and service economy.
