Poland Eyes Stronger Trade Ties with India Amid Global Tariffs
Poland seeks new partners as India shows willingness to engage.
Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski highlighted the growing potential for enhanced trade relations with India during his visit to New Delhi on Monday. Speaking to reporters, Sikorski explained that Poland is actively looking for new trade partners in response to increased tariffs imposed on European Union goods by certain regions. He specifically noted that “India has shown willingness” to engage with Poland, emphasizing the mutual interest in fostering a free trade environment amid shifting global dynamics. This comes as Poland, as an EU member, navigates challenges from external trade barriers while seeking diversified economic opportunities.
Sikorski underscored the compatibility between the agricultural sectors of India and the EU, suggesting significant untapped potential in bilateral collaboration. He praised the EU’s predictable single market framework, characterized by checks and balances among member states, the European Parliament, and the European Commission. This structure, he argued, makes the EU an attractive and stable partner for trade and investment, unlike more volatile systems elsewhere. The Polish leader expressed optimism about the ongoing negotiations for an India-EU Free Trade Agreement, expressing confidence that it would reach a successful conclusion to benefit both sides.
The India-EU FTA talks are in their final stages, with expectations that a breakthrough could be achieved during the upcoming 16th EU-India Summit on January 27. European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are scheduled to visit India to represent the bloc at the summit. Sikorski described the collaboration between the EU and India as having “large potential,” particularly in creating predictable and mutually advantageous trade flows that could counter protectionist trends in other parts of the world.

During his meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, the discussions extended beyond economics to regional and global security concerns. Both leaders strongly condemned violations of international borders, whether through military aggression or terrorism. Sikorski highlighted Poland’s recent experience with transnational threats, including an arson attack and an attempted act of state terrorism involving the bombing of a Polish railway line under a moving train. He fully agreed with Jaishankar’s call for zero tolerance toward terrorism and the need to dismantle terrorist infrastructure in neighboring regions.
The visit reinforces the deepening strategic dialogue between Poland and India, two nations that share concerns over border integrity and counter-terrorism. Sikorski’s remarks signal Poland’s proactive approach to diversifying trade partnerships while aligning with India’s interest in expanding economic ties. As the EU-India FTA negotiations advance, this engagement could pave the way for stronger bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and security domains in the coming years.
