PM Modi, Trump Reaffirm Commitment To Concluding Trade Deal Soon

Leaders stress urgency of concluding India-US trade negotiations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump agreed on the need to conclude negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement at the earliest during their meeting in Evian on Wednesday evening. The discussion took place ahead of the scheduled visit of US Trade Representative Jameson Greer to India next week, with both leaders expressing support for advancing economic cooperation and taking India-US relations to a higher level.

According to officials familiar with the discussions, the two sides emphasized the importance of completing ongoing trade negotiations and finalising a mutually beneficial agreement. The proposed deal is expected to address key trade and market access issues while strengthening the broader strategic and economic partnership between the two countries.

The meeting also focused on wider bilateral ties and global developments. President Trump spoke positively about relations with India and highlighted the growing importance of the partnership between Washington and New Delhi. He described India as a major global power and expressed confidence in the future trajectory of the relationship under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi.

During remarks following the meeting, Trump reiterated his commitment to strengthening ties with India and underscored the strategic significance of cooperation between the two democracies. He also indicated that the United States valued its partnership with India on a range of international issues, including regional stability and economic growth.

The leaders exchanged views on global geopolitical developments, including ongoing efforts aimed at promoting peace and stability in conflict-affected regions. Trump said it would be for India to decide the extent of its involvement in initiatives related to peace efforts in the Middle East, acknowledging New Delhi's growing influence on the international stage.

Following his talks with Trump, Prime Minister Modi also met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, continuing a series of high-level diplomatic engagements on the sidelines of the international gathering. The meetings reflected India's active participation in discussions on global economic and security issues while reinforcing its expanding role in international diplomacy.
