PM Modi Says India, Switzerland Identify New Defence and Nuclear Energy Cooperation
PM Modi highlights strategic cooperation and new mobility agreements.
India and Switzerland have identified new areas of cooperation in defence and nuclear energy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said after holding bilateral talks with Swiss President Guy Parmelin in New Delhi on October 5. The discussions focused on strengthening ties between the two countries and expanding cooperation in strategic areas. The meeting between Modi and Parmelin was followed by a joint press interaction, during which the Prime Minister outlined the areas where India and Switzerland see opportunities for deeper engagement.
The two countries also signed several agreements during the Swiss President's visit to India. One of the agreements concerns mobility and is expected to provide longer visa durations and student permits, potentially making travel and educational opportunities between the two countries more accessible. The agreement is part of efforts to strengthen people-to-people links and facilitate greater movement between India and Switzerland.
Defence emerged as one of the areas where the two sides identified scope for greater cooperation. The discussions come as India continues to expand its defence partnerships with countries across Europe and other regions, while Switzerland has maintained engagement with India in areas of mutual interest. The two countries are expected to explore opportunities for collaboration while taking into account their respective priorities and existing bilateral relationship.

Nuclear energy was another key area highlighted by Prime Minister Modi following his meeting with President Parmelin. India has been seeking to strengthen its capabilities and partnerships in the energy sector, including through greater cooperation in nuclear energy. Identifying nuclear cooperation as an area for engagement with Switzerland adds another dimension to the bilateral relationship, which has traditionally included economic, scientific and technological ties.
President Guy Parmelin's visit also comes as India and Switzerland seek to broaden their relationship beyond established areas of cooperation. The agreements signed during the visit, including the mobility-related understanding, are aimed at creating closer links between the two countries. The discussions between the two leaders covered both strategic cooperation and measures that could strengthen exchanges involving citizens, students and professionals.
The latest developments underline India's effort to deepen its engagement with Switzerland across strategic and people-centric areas. With defence and nuclear energy identified as new areas of cooperation and agreements signed on mobility, the two countries are looking to expand the scope of their partnership. The outcomes of the talks are expected to provide a framework for further cooperation between India and Switzerland in the coming years.
