PM Modi Says India Diversified Energy Imports To Over 40 Countries During Fuel Crisis

India diversified energy imports during global fuel crisis.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India successfully managed one of the world’s major energy crises by diversifying its crude oil import sources, strengthening diplomatic ties, and ensuring that domestic consumers were largely protected from global price shocks. He made the remarks after inaugurating the country’s first greenfield integrated refinery-cum-petrochemical complex at Pachpadra in Rajasthan’s Balotra district.

Addressing the event, the Prime Minister said India expanded its energy import network significantly during the crisis period. He noted that the country, which earlier depended on around 25–26 oil-supplying nations, increased its sourcing base to more than 40 countries as global uncertainties intensified, ensuring uninterrupted fuel availability.

PM Modi credited India’s diplomatic outreach for helping maintain stable energy supplies during turbulent global conditions. He also said public sector oil companies absorbed losses of over ₹75,000 crore between April and June due to rising global crude prices, adding that the government took steps such as reducing excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per litre to shield citizens from price escalation.

The Prime Minister said there were attempts to spread misinformation and create panic during the crisis, but claimed such efforts did not succeed. He also remarked that critics who predicted India would struggle during the period were proven wrong, asserting that the country had demonstrated resilience through coordinated policy action and long-term planning.

Highlighting India’s growing energy profile, PM Modi said the country has now become the world’s fourth-largest refining hub and continues to expand its refining capacity. He added that disruptions in global fuel and fertiliser supply chains, including those linked to geopolitical tensions, were effectively managed due to India’s strategic preparedness and diversified sourcing approach.

Reiterating his government’s governance approach, the Prime Minister said emphasis is placed on completing projects rather than merely announcing them. He also referred to earlier delays in the refinery project and criticised previous administrations for slowing its progress, stating that the current government prioritises execution and timely delivery of infrastructure projects.
