PM Modi, Japanese PM Takaichi Inaugurate Maruti Suzuki's Rs 35,000 Crore Plant
PM Modi, Japan PM inaugurate Maruti Suzuki's new Kharkhoda plant.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi jointly inaugurated Maruti Suzuki's fourth manufacturing facility at Kharkhoda in Haryana during the India-Japan Joint Economic Forum. The new facility is expected to strengthen India's position as a major global automobile manufacturing and export hub while further deepening industrial cooperation between India and Japan.
Highlighting the importance of bilateral economic cooperation, Modi said Japanese expertise and investment combined with India's speed and scale could benefit global markets. He pointed to Japanese companies producing motorcycles, electrical equipment, precision manufacturing products and medical technology in India for international markets. The Prime Minister also said India continues to play an important role in global supply chains amid trade uncertainty and weaker global demand.
Spread across nearly 800 acres, the Kharkhoda facility has an initial annual production capacity of five lakh vehicles. The capacity is planned to be expanded to 10 lakh units annually, which would make it one of the world's largest automobile manufacturing facilities once fully operational. The plant will also support Maruti Suzuki's long-term goal of achieving a total annual production capacity of 40 lakh vehicles.

Maruti Suzuki has committed an investment of around Rs 35,000 crore for the project, which is expected to generate more than 21,000 jobs. Toshihiro Suzuki, President, Representative Director and Chairman of Suzuki Motor Corporation, described the facility as a symbol of the successful India-Japan partnership and the Make in India initiative. He said the company was accelerating investment, employment, exports and technology development in the country.
The Kharkhoda plant has also been developed with a strong focus on sustainability and renewable energy. The facility currently has 20 MW of solar power capacity, which is planned to increase to 70 MW by 2030. It also features a biogas plant and energy storage systems as part of efforts to reduce its environmental impact and improve the sustainability of large-scale automobile production.
Built under Suzuki's Smart Factory concept, the facility uses advanced digital technologies to monitor manufacturing operations in real time. It also incorporates Industry 5.0 practices, including collaborative robots working alongside human operators to improve efficiency, safety and production quality. The plant was initially operationalised in February 2025 after its foundation stone was laid by Modi in August 2022.
