PM Modi and Brazil’s Lula Talk Strategic Partnership, Stress Global South Cooperation
India and Brazil reaffirm strong ties and plan deeper collaboration across key sectors.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday, highlighting the importance of close cooperation to advance the shared interests of the Global South. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership and elevating it to new heights in the coming year.
According to an official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the 45-minute call focused on preparations for President Lula’s upcoming State Visit to India from February 19 to 21. Both leaders emphasized the need for reformed multilateralism to address common global challenges, underscoring the pivotal role of India-Brazil collaboration.
President Lula expressed his intention to attend the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Impact Summit in New Delhi next month. Recalling their meetings in Brasília and South Africa last year, PM Modi and President Lula noted significant progress in bilateral trade, investment, technology, energy, defence, agriculture, and people-to-people exchanges. Modi described the partnership as a key driver for Global South interests and expressed eagerness to host Lula in India.
The call coincided with discussions around the Gaza Board of Peace, an initiative led by US President Donald Trump, which has invited India, Brazil, and Russia to join. Lula has publicly criticised Trump’s approach to global leadership via social media, reflecting ongoing diplomatic nuances among BRICS nations.
With the State Visit and AI Summit on the horizon, India and Brazil aim to further deepen collaboration in emerging technologies, sustainable energy, and economic development, signalling a stronger partnership that could influence global South cooperation in the years ahead.
