Piyush Goyal: India to Implement 2-3 FTAs in Six Months, 3-4 More Expected in 2027

Piyush Goyal says India will activate multiple trade agreements within months.

India is set to significantly expand its network of free trade agreements (FTAs), with at least two to three major trade pacts expected to come into force over the next six months, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday. The announcement reflects the government's continued focus on strengthening global trade partnerships and enhancing market access for Indian businesses.

Speaking virtually at the Citi India Conference 2026 in Mumbai, Goyal said India has made substantial progress in trade negotiations over the past three-and-a-half years. According to the minister, the country has finalized nine FTAs during this period, covering key partners including Mauritius, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, Oman, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) bloc, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the United States.

Several of these agreements have already been implemented, including those with Mauritius, the UAE, Australia, Oman, and the EFTA bloc. Separate agreements with the UK and New Zealand have also been signed. Goyal stated that additional agreements are expected to become operational in the coming months, while another three to four significant trade pacts could be executed during 2027, further expanding India's global trade footprint.

The minister also encouraged businesses to make long-term investments in India, noting that early investors are likely to benefit the most from the country's growth trajectory. He emphasized that India's economic fundamentals remain strong and that ongoing reforms, infrastructure development, and international trade partnerships are creating significant opportunities for industry and investors.

Addressing concerns surrounding the ongoing West Asia crisis, Goyal said India has successfully managed energy-related challenges through diversification of supply sources. He noted that despite disruptions affecting parts of the Gulf region and concerns over energy routes through the Strait of Hormuz, India has maintained uninterrupted supplies of petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, LNG, LPG, and fertilizers. The minister added that the country has been able to keep inflation under control, ensure adequate energy availability, and maintain stable supplies for consumers, industries, and farmers despite global uncertainties.
