Paytm lets NRIs Pay With UPI Using Foreign Mobile Numbers

No Indian SIM needed—link NRE/NRO accounts instantly for seamless payments.

Paytm has launched a groundbreaking beta feature allowing Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to make UPI payments using international mobile numbers, eliminating the need for an Indian SIM card. Announced on October 27, 2025, the service enables NRIs to link NRE (Non-Resident External) or NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary) bank accounts directly to the Paytm app for fast, secure, and fee-free transactions across India.

Currently available to NRIs from 12 countries—including Singapore, Australia, Canada, UAE, USA, UK, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Hong Kong, France, and Malaysia—the feature supports online shopping, money transfers, in-store QR payments, and inter-account transfers in Indian rupees. All transactions bypass forex conversion fees and international gateway charges, making remittances and daily payments more affordable.

How to Activate Paytm UPI for NRIs:

  1. Download the Paytm app and log in with your international mobile number
  2. Verify via SMS OTP
  3. Link your NRE/NRO bank account
  4. Start paying via QR scan, online checkout, or merchant POS

Paytm’s move aligns with its vision to bridge global financial access for the Indian diaspora. The company also supports UPI One World, a prepaid wallet for foreign tourists, and UPI Global Acceptance for Indian users paying abroad. Additional tools include balance tracking across banks, expense analytics, payment hiding, and PDF/Excel UPI statements.
