Pawan Khera Joins Guwahati Crime Branch Investigation In Passport Case After Court Orders
Pawan Khera appears before Guwahati Crime Branch in passport case investigation.
Congress leader Pawan Khera appeared before the Crime Branch of Assam Police in Guwahati on Wednesday for questioning in connection with a passport controversy case. The development marks a key step in an ongoing investigation linked to allegations and counter-allegations involving political leaders in Assam.
The case originates from claims made by Khera regarding alleged irregularities, including multiple passports and overseas assets, allegedly connected to Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The allegations were strongly denied by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, who described them as “false, fabricated and politically motivated.” Following the complaint, the Guwahati Crime Branch registered an FIR against Khera, citing charges including defamation, forgery, and criminal conspiracy.
The legal proceedings have since moved through multiple courts. Khera was granted interim transit bail by the Telangana High Court on April 10, 2026, before the Supreme Court of India directed him on April 17 to approach the appropriate court in Assam. The Gauhati High Court later rejected his pre-arrest bail plea on April 24. However, on April 30, the Supreme Court granted him anticipatory bail, while observing that the matter appeared to have political undertones.

Despite being protected from arrest under the Supreme Court order, Khera remains under investigation and has been required to cooperate with Assam Police. His appearance before the Crime Branch in Guwahati is part of the ongoing interrogation process. Officials have not indicated any immediate custodial action, but the investigation continues as authorities examine documents and evidence related to the allegations.
Speaking to reporters outside the Crime Branch office, Congress legal representative Reetam Singh said that Khera had complied with the summons and was cooperating with investigators. Senior Assam Congress leader Ripun Bora also confirmed that Khera travelled from Delhi to appear before officials, adding that individuals granted bail are required to assist the investigation process as per law.
The case has also intensified political exchanges between the ruling and opposition parties in Assam. Ripun Bora accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of politicising the matter, while alleging that several cases related to hate speech against him remain pending in court. As the investigation progresses, Assam Police are expected to continue examining evidence while both sides maintain sharply contrasting positions on the nature and intent of the allegations.
