Passenger Vehicle Sales Jump 34% as Auto Wholesales Surge in July

India’s automobile industry recorded strong wholesale growth in July 2026, with passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers all registering double-digit increases compared with the same month last year. The latest figures released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) indicate that sustained customer demand supported sales across the major vehicle categories. The performance marked a particularly strong July for the industry, with manufacturers reporting significant year-on-year gains.

Passenger vehicle wholesales rose 34.3% in July to 4.58 lakh units, compared with the corresponding period in 2025. The segment recorded the highest growth among the three categories highlighted in the data. The sharp increase indicates continued demand for cars and other passenger vehicles, with manufacturers benefiting from stronger market activity during the month.

Three-wheeler wholesales also recorded substantial growth, increasing 33.4% to 0.93 lakh units in July. The segment includes vehicles widely used for passenger transportation and commercial purposes across India. The strong year-on-year increase contributed to the overall double-digit expansion recorded by the automobile industry during the month.

Two-wheelers, which account for a significant share of India's overall vehicle market, also witnessed healthy growth. Wholesales increased 22.6% year-on-year to 19.23 lakh units in July 2026. The rise reflects continued demand in one of the country's largest automobile segments and further strengthened the industry's overall performance during the month.

Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM, said the automobile industry had delivered its strongest-ever July sales, with robust double-digit growth across passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers. His assessment comes as manufacturers continue to benefit from sustained demand across different vehicle categories. The broad-based nature of the growth also indicates that the July improvement was not limited to a single segment of the market.

The July figures provide a positive snapshot of India's automobile market, with all three major categories recording substantial year-on-year increases. Passenger vehicle sales crossed the 4.5-lakh mark, while two-wheeler wholesales exceeded 19 lakh units during the month. With demand remaining firm, the industry has entered the second half of 2026 on a strong note, although future sales will continue to depend on consumer demand and broader economic conditions.
