Parts of Tamil Nadu to Receive Rain Despite Record Heatwave

IMD forecasts rain in Tamil Nadu, but heatwave continues.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall across parts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and lightning. This is expected to provide some relief from the ongoing heatwave, which continues to affect several districts across the state.

Rainfall activity is anticipated in south Tamil Nadu, north coastal districts, Puducherry, and Karaikal. The Western Ghats may also witness showers. However, much of the north interior, including districts like Namakkal and Salem, is likely to remain largely dry. In Chennai, partly cloudy skies are expected with chances of localized moderate rain.

Despite intermittent showers, heatwave conditions persist. On Tuesday, Vellore recorded the highest temperature in the state at 42.2°C, followed by Karur at 41°C, while Erode and Namakkal hovered around 40°C. Other districts, including Tirupattur (39.5°C), Tiruchy (39°C), and Tiruttani (38.9°C), also experienced near-heatwave conditions. Cities like Madurai, Salem, and Tiruchy airport reported temperatures exceeding 37°C.

The IMD noted that maximum temperatures in many areas were 2–3°C above normal, indicating sustained heat stress. Meteorologists attribute the current mix of heat and localized rainfall to a wind discontinuity stretching from eastern India to the Gulf of Mannar, which is enhancing convective activity, allowing brief showers to develop even amid high temperatures.

Looking ahead, similar weather patterns are expected on April 9, with isolated rainfall likely across multiple regions. From April 10 onwards, scattered light to moderate rain may occur across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal before gradually becoming confined to the Western Ghats and delta districts.

Authorities advise the public to remain cautious: avoid prolonged exposure during peak daytime heat, drink plenty of fluids, wear light clothing, and ensure vulnerable populations, such as children and the elderly, are protected. Despite intermittent rainfall, meteorologists warn that temperatures are unlikely to drop significantly in the coming days.
